About Mary

Although born in the great industrial city of Coventry, Mary Edwards has spent most of her life in the country and nearly all of that living and working on farms on the border between Wales and England in the glorious Wye Valley.

Read on below for more details about her life in art and hear Mary talk about her work in this short film created by documentary film-maker Woodrow Morris assisted by Tenaya Steed. Going Over the Hill Singing and DancingFor more than 30 years Mary has developed a unique style of painting in oils, depicting intriguing views of rural life, which, though contemporary in style, are intensely nostalgic snapshots of country people and the animals they look after, love and depend upon. But her work is not purely rural - her figurative work portrays the interactions between people and, as with all of her paintings, the title of each piece is an integral element of the work itself.

She says of her paintings: “They reflect small moments of time from happy memories and imagination, all of which have been part of my life for more years than I care to remember.

“I am a self-taught painter, fortunate enough to have had work accepted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition,

the RWA Open Exhibition (Bristol), the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery (London) and many other exhibitions and competitions, both local and further afield, even exhibiting alongside the likes of Sir Kyffin Williams and His

Royal Highness Prince Charles.

“I sometimes pinch myself thinking how lucky I am to be a painter - every day is a new day full of expectation for the magic that painting can bring. When all goes well, and with the knowledge that I can never be bored,

there is always so much to see, do and think about.”

"I really hope you enjoy browsing through all the paintings on my site but this really is only a small selection of my work. My paintings are small and affordable - largely under £300 in the art galleries I deal with. Please pop back to the Mary Edwards Painting website whenever you can and feel free to contact me if you want to chat about any of my work and current gallery exhibitions."

Mary is not only a prolific artist, she is also actively involved in promoting and encouraging others to get involved with the visual arts through her work with the historic Wye Valley Art Society. She is currently in her umpteenth year on the committee and has held numerous posts including chairman of the society, and would love anyone in the Wye Valley area interested in the arts to join her at one of the society's monthly talks.
